...a unique and historic landmark in Hertfordshire. Now converted into dwellings (eighteen houses, five apartments and a penthouse) the Water Tower and surrounding housing development is situated in a conservation area that perfectly showcases Glendyne’s natural beauty and architectural qualities.
Built in 1932 by property developer John Laing, Shenley Water Tower served Shenley Hospital and contained a telephone exchange, and water tanks for drinking, bathing, laundry and gardening. The hospital closed in 1990, but during the Second World War the tower served as a lookout post for German aircraft activity and in more recent years has been used by the police for surveillance.
A painstaking renovation and conversion by developer Fieldrise Homes has created a spectacular development which includes a penthouse with views across four counties as well as St Paul’s Cathedral. The Glendyne slates have been used throughout the development carried out by main contractor Crestfort Construction. The installation work of roofing contractor TGV Roofing has been highly commended.
“This is a landmark project and we’re delighted with the Glendyne slates and the first-rate work of TGV,” says Clive Blanks of Fieldrise Homes. “In fact, after a recent storm, an inspection of the water tower revealed there was no movement in the slates. I anticipate this roofing project is destined to last 200 years.”
Glendyne is a blue/grey natural slate
produced in the town of Saint Marc du Lac Long in Quebec, Canada. It has a fast growing reputation for quality due to the exceptional slate deposit and the combination of modern extraction technology with traditional skills. Produced from deposits laid in the Ordovician era some 500 million years ago the quarry was first opened by British slate quarrymen in the early part of the 20th century. Roofs with Glendyne slate can still be seen today around the area of the quarries some 90 years later and may well be the most popularly approved slate in Europe. In addition to certification to BS EN 12326, it is also tested to AST< for the United States, NF for France and STS for Belgium.
Glendyne is manufactured to the highest standards in two thicknesses, the Glendyne Fours which are 4 to 5 mm thick and available in the following sizes: 508 x 254mm, 457 x 254mm,457 x 220mm, 406 x 254mm, 406 x 220mm and 406 x 203mm. Glendyne Fives which are 5 to 6 mm thick are only available in the size 508 x 254mm. Glendyne slates will withstand the most severe weather conditions: they are unaffected by sunlight, ultraviolet light and even acid rain. Laid correctly In the UK, Glendyne is available exclusively from Cembrit.
