Cembrit Westerland fibre cement slates are the crowning glory for Hill House, a prestigious eco-development in Ropley, Hampshire. Chosen to give a sharp modern architectural feel, 6,000 blue/black slates were used for this 6,700 sq ft timber frame house.
Westerland slate is available in blue-black, graphite and welsh blue and has an appearance very close to that of natural slate. Its riven surface and natural dressed edges make it an ideal solution for situations where a traditional appearance is important. Fibre cement slates are cost effective, lightweight, do not require grading and sorting and are suitable for all types of commercial and residential projects.
Built by The Malthouse Consultancy, Hill House is a bespoke design and was supplied by Timber by Design Ltd. The eco-friendly house is constructed from softwoods, reducing the pressure on the rarer and slower growing hardwoods. The design also includes the latest technology for heating and cooling with heat pumps and air handling and air heat recovery. All of the houses built by The Malthouse Consultancy are bespoke and are designed to suit the sites requirements with almost no constraints on size shape and design (unlike the majority of other timber frame companies).
“We are very pleased with the slates from Cembrit and consequently have used them on other projects since” says Martin Evans from the Malthouse Consultancy. “The slates contrast beautifully with the wooden exterior of the house. The house also offers many energy saving advantages and early monitoring is showing very encouraging results.”
Each slate in the fibre cement range is pre-holed and offers consistent size, weight and thickness, saving time on site as no grading or sorting is required in contrast to natural slate. Fibre cement slates from Cembrit Blunn are manufactured using Portland cement together with a non-asbestos formulation of blended synthetic and cellulose fibres. Each slate is pigmented during production and fully compressed. They are then finished with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic coloured coating to the top face and edges, and a clear binder to the back face.
