8000 Jutland slates from Cembrit have been used at the new Princess Lodge Care Centre in Swindon. Recently built on the site of the former Princess Margaret Hospital, the building has an unusual roof that features large, facetted turrets, hips and valleys. This design required a slate that could meet both creative challenge and the tight project timescale. The high quality, Jutland fibre cement slate from Cembrit was considered the ideal solution with the additional benefit of its blue/black colour providing a complement to the red brick of the building.
The three-storey L-shaped building is operated by Lifestyle Care PLC and the main contractor is Healthcare Developments. Princess Lodge was roofed with Jutland slates, specified by Nigel Appleton, owner of roofing contractors The Ashford Hill Roofing Company Ltd. Cembrit slates were chosen over alternatives due to both cost savings and the contractor’s long and successful working relationship with Cembrit.
“The roof design was certainly challenging” comments Nigel Appleton. “But with our policy of employing only quality experienced roofers, areas such as the turrets were no cause for concern - although it would be a challenge for the less experienced. The Jutland slates not only look great, but our roofers on the project found the slates very easy to work with. I also like the local service I get from Cembrit’s Southampton depot and, best of all, the constructors and developers were more than satisfied with the end result.”
For ease of installation Cembrit’s Jutland slates are lightweight, pre-holed, durable and easy to handle. Fibre cement slates are an economic alternative to natural roofing materials. Suitable for all types of projects, they are particularly appropriate for new builds. Jutland slates are high quality and due to their semi-matt acrylic coating to both faces and all edges, will stay looking as beautiful as the day they were first installed. Jutland slates are available in four colours, graphite, blue/black, russet and autumn brown.
Cembrit is a member of the Dansk Eternit Holding A/S Group of Denmark, one of Europe’s major building material producers of fibre reinforced cement
products for the roofing and cladding industry. The ultimate parent company FL Smith this year celebrates its 125 year anniversary.
