Cembonit cladding from Cembrit, supplied by FGF of Hemel Hempstead, has been used on a prestigious refurbishment project at Goldsmiths, University of London. The Whitehead Building (originally designed by architects Enthoven and Mock and built in the late 1960s) has a prime location on the New Cross campus in South East London. What was originally a striking façade had suffered the effects of time so Cembrit’s coloured cladding was selected to help give the building a fresh new look.
The buildings exterior has had a complete facelift, including re-cladding the exterior walls, adding a glass front to the college green side of the building, as well as improvements to the windows and roof. 1800m² of Cembrit’s 8mm Cembonit cladding in flint, has been used to provide an attractive, cost-effective and maintenance-free finish.
FGF is a leading supplier of high performance cladding used its detailed understanding of the demands of the modern construction industry to recommend Cembonit to project architect, Alsop and Stormer. Brian Pilbeam at FGF comments: “Cembonit’s combination of aesthetic appeal and a cost effective price made it an ideal material for this flagship project. In addition to these features, the performance of the product is also second-to-none, so it can be specified with peace-of-mind – whatever the application.”
Cembonit is specially designed for all types of external cladding, semi-exposed, and internal lining applications. A smooth, through-coloured sheet manufactured using the autoclave curing process; Cembonit is produced from cement, sand, cellulose, wollastonite and water glass and impregnated with an aqueous, hydrophobic liquid, to provide the sheets with a water and dirt repellent surface. Cembonit is a Class O cladding panel that is strong, durable and lightweight and consequently ideal for a variety of decorative uses. |
