CEMBRIT HELPS OUT AT PRINCESS ELIZABETH HOSPITAL

Release Date: 22 Jan 2009
17,000m² of Cempanel lining board from cladding specialist Cembrit has been used at an extensive development at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey. This carrier board was used as insulated render /rainscreen with the 10mm board used in the project. John Henry Court is part of the much larger redevelopment of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. It provides accommodation for existing hospital staff with 66 units of accommodation as well as communal lounges and laundry facilities. Nightingale Associates, who specialise in the health, education and science sectors, were the architects on the project and Intex Facades were the contractor.

Cempanel cement particle board comprises wood particles and cement to create a low cost lining board for exterior and interior cladding and lining, or even for partitioning. Cempanel is Class 0 fire rated, and can be decorated on or off site. The combination of chips and cement creates a board that is stronger but lighter than plasterboard and is arguably less likely to be damaged on site. Cempanel standard 1200mm by 2400mm boards are available in 8, 10, 12 and 16mm thicknesses with other thicknesses available to order. This commodity building board is competitively priced and extremely versatile.

Off-site construction methods were used to great effect on the project in response to the constraints of building on the island. This meant that, amongst other things, no wet trades were needed and there was less time on site. Cembrit’s cladding panels offer the advantage of being supplied as pre-cast panels that are simple to install on site. The resulting building provides the hospital with a low maintenance building, finished in high quality products, and the resident staff with light, contemporary accommodation.
